Q: How can I migrate from GT4 to GT5?

A: IGE authored a guide for D-Grid on migrating to GT5 from GT4 that contains an analysis of the differences in many key tools and services between the two versions, in addition to installation differences.

Q: Which batch systems/job schedulers does Globus support?

A: Globus officially supports PBS (including Torque), Condor and Platform LSF. There are also unofficial job scheduling support for Sun GridEngine and SLURM (Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management).

Q: How can I deploy Globus on a separate machine from the PBS Torque batch system?

A: This can be accomplished by doing the following:

On the PBS Torque machine:
  1. Deploy PBS Torque: install the PBS Torque server (and worker nodes) according to the procedure detailed in http://www.clusterresources.com/torquedocs21/1.1installation.shtml.
  2. Export the /var/spool/pbs/server_logs file over NFS, as read-only, to the GRAM machine.
  3. Allow job submission from the GRAM machine to the PBS server, by editing the acl_hosts and submit_hosts parameters in the Torque server configuration.
On the Globus machine:
  1. Install Globus and compile Torque support.
  2. Install Torque package, configured as a job submit client.
  3. Specify your PBS server hostname within /var/spool/torque/server_name.
  4. Edit /etc/fstab, and add the Torque server_logs mount point.
  5. The file $GLOBUS_LOCATION/etc/globus-pbs.conf should contain the path to the PBS server logs on the GRAM node, e.g. log_path=/var/spool/pbs/server_logs.
Thanks to Paul Podolny from IsraGrid for this solution.

Globus Toolkit

questions & answers about Globus Toolkit in general (globus-mailinglists?) and non IGE-related stuff

Q: How do I rejuvenate a proxy that is about to expire while my job is still running?

A: A tutorial on how to deal with this situation was authored by IGE.

Q: Does Globus support IPv6?

A: GridFTP has previously been successfully tested to some extent with their experimental support for IPv6 (e.g. add -ipv6 option to globus-url-copy).

As part of Globus' investigation, the Globus team concluded that GRAM5 does not currently support IPv6. The Globus team are currently working with IGE and IGE's testbed resources to test this more thoroughly, including testing mixed mode IPv4/IPv6 networks which are crucial for any IPv4 to IPv6 transition period.
