StratusLab

StratusLab is developing a complete, open-source cloud distribution that allows grid and non-grid resource centers to offer and to exploit an “Infrastructure as a Service” cloud. It is particularly focused on enhancing distributed computing infrastructures such as the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI).

The project uses agile methodologies to rapidly evolve the distribution to meet cloud user and administrator demands. It operates a reference infrastructure to get feedback from users and to validate the distribution.

The project lowers entry barriers by providing “stock” machine images, customization tools, and a “Marketplace” for sharing them. Complete service management with auto-scaling, handling peak demands with hybrid clouds, and other advanced features will appear in later releases.

Agreement

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with StratusLab was signed on 21st September 2011 at the EGI Technical Forum.

Joint Work Plan

A close collaboration between IGE and StratusLab will allow both projects to leverage synergistic cloud and Globus grid developments that potentially already exist and will emerge as part of their work. The specific goals of the collaboration are:

to exchange requirements on infrastructure, architecture and Grid sites taking advantage of Cloud concepts and technologies
to provide appropriate Globus services and tools as Software as a Service (SaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS) deployed on the StratusLab platform, based on those most beneficial for European Globus users
to release and provision Globus StratusLab Appliances for the StratusLab Marketplace
to certify IGE software for use within StratusLab Cloud
to collaborate on appropriate training events where possible
to disseminate the results of this collaboration within the remit of each project's dissemination and communication activities
