Job Opportunities in the Field of Grid-Computing/Cloud-Computing

The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre is one of the three national High Performance Computing centers in Germany and operates one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe. The fastest computer in Europe, the SuperMUC, will become operational at the LRZ in 2012. Within national and European projects we provide scientists throughout the whole world with an up-to-date Grid computing infrastructure for data, network, and computing services.

In the field of Grid-computing/Cloud-computing the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching (Munich) is looking for

a scientific staff member (university post graduate degree; master's degree or equivalent).

You will contribute to national and European research projects (www.d-grid.de, www.cern.ch/lcg, www.prace-project.eu, www.egi.eu, www.ige-project.eu), some of which are headed by the LRZ, and will be working in a multifaceted field on a variety of tasks aimed at achieving long-lasting results. You will collaborate with the leading high performance computing centers in Europe and will work with the main developers of Globus in the USA. The position being filled is in the area of "Grid Operation". The solutions which you develop and implement will be applied in large-scale European projects.

In particular, you will take responsibility for some of the following tasks (either as an individual or as part of a team):

  • operation of Grid infrastructure
  • Grid user administration
  • installation of middleware (Globus, UNICORE, gLite, ARC)
  • integration of LRZ Grid resources into EGI/D-Grid accounting (GridSAFE, APEL)
  • controlling of budgets, producing usage statistics
  • presenting research results in meetings, work shops, symposia, and conferences (primarily in English)
  • facilitating training on the usage of Grid software
  • supporting users executing Grid projects
  • representing LRZ at national and international policy bodies
  • liaison to scientific communities (e.g., astrophysics, particle physics, geophysics, climatology, medical and life sciences) depending on your scientific orientation
  • writing reports, deliverables, and documentation (primarily in English)
  • maintaining our web Grid portal and our internal wiki
  • programming in C, C++, Java, Python, Perl, shell scripting
  • scouting new technologies and developments, focusing on using Cloud Computing and virtualization techniques in Grids

You should have the following qualifications:

  • a post graduate university degree in a scientifically oriented subject (computer science, mathematics, physics, etc.) with an above average GPA
  • experience with UNIX/Linux based systems
  • programming knowledge with shell and scripting languages (Perl, Python, etc.) and a high level programming language (C, C++, or Java)
  • willingness to participate in symposia, conferences and workshops, also outside of Germany (e.g., Bologna, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, USA, etc.)
  • good speaking and writing skills in English
  • a basic knowledge of the German language
  • initiative, capacity for teamwork, and creativity.

The following skills would be helpful:

  • familiarity with Grid Middleware: Globus, gLite, or UNICORE
  • mastery of HTML and CSS
  • familiarity with Eclipse and plugins
  • knowledge of common monitoring tools such as Nagios, Ganglia, Inca, etc.
  • experience with installation and configuration of Apache Webserver, REST interfaces.
